Outside the Classroom

While seminar courses discussing great works are the backbone of the Master of Arts in Teaching, apprenticeships under master teachers and field learning at premier institutes of culture, history, and science are also vital aspects of the program.

As the birthplace of the United States and the fifth largest city in the country, Philadelphia offers unique opportunities for teachers to deepen their own love of learning both in their subject and outside of it. Apprenticeships, observations, and mentoring are also integral to the MAT. We believe that the practice of teaching is best learned under the guidance of those already skilled in the craft, which is why MAT students spend significant time apprenticing and observing master teachers at both the collegiate and secondary levels.
